What is a Diesel Engine?

Some people call it a diesel engine, others call it a compression-ignition driving force, but both are the same thing – a particular type of engine that is very common amongst larger vehicles but is gaining momentum amongst smaller cars. It uses a distinct chemical and physical reaction that allows the engine to run smoothly. It has a special process which makes it a unique system.

What is the Difference Between a Diesel Engine and a Gasoline Engine?

Both diesel and gasoline engines use precise physical and chemical reactions to fuel and power engines. In a gasoline engine, they mix the intake stroke fuel with air, before going to the compression stroke. The piston is raised, which then compresses the fuel and air mixture. Next is the ignition stroke, where the spark plug is used to ignite the fuel and air mixture, powering the engine. It is an explosion and is what powers the engine. The product of this explosion and reaction, called exhaust, is then pushed through the exhaust pipe as the piston goes back up.

In a diesel engine, on the other hand, within the intake stroke, the intake valve is opened up, allowing air into the diesel engine block. As the piston goes down, the engine goes into the compression stroke, where the piston rises back up, and the air is compressed and in this process heated to over 540°C. the next step must be very precise is the explosion reaction is to occur. In the combustion stroke, they injected the fuel into the heated and compression air, and the piston goes down. It causes the explosion which powers the diesel engine head, which powers the driving force as a whole. The exhaust is then pushed through the exhaust valve as the piston goes back up.

How Does a Diesel Engine Work?

As you can see, the diesel engine does not rely upon as many parts as the gasoline engine. The diesel engine relies more on the reaction between the air, fuel, pressure, and heat, rather than using spark plugs. This chemical and physical reaction powers the engine and requires a particular form of fuel. This fuel leads to a higher efficiency, being both thermodynamic and fuel efficient. The diesel engine block is only slightly different than a gasoline engine block, making it easy for many users.

How are Diesel Engines Maintained?

In comparison to a gasoline engine, a diesel-powered engine has a much longer life and requires less maintenance. Because there are no ignition tune-ups or spark plugs within diesel engine head, there is not as high of a need for regular maintenance. However, that does not mean that diesel engine block.
